Das Forschungsprojekt gliedert sich in vier Teilbereiche, die sich an nationalen Kinematographien orientieren. Auf Western-Elemente hin untersucht wird das mexikanische, das brasilianische, das australische und das japanische Kino. Diese nationalen Kinematographien und die Genres, die jeweils fokussiert werden, werden aber nicht als feststehende Größen behandelt. Vielmehr werden permanent die Wechselprozesse zwischen den Genres mit dem Hauptbezug zum US-amerikanischen und zum Italo-Western analysiert. Das impliziert auch den Blick auf andere Genres dieser Länder und Produktionen mit Western-Elementen in anderen nationalen Kinematographien.

The research project is divided into four subparts concentrating on specific national cinematographies. Western elements in the Mexican, the Brazilian, the Australian and the Japanese cinema will be analyzed. But these national cinematographies and the corresponding focused genres will not be dealt with as clear-cut, static parameters. Rather the constant alternating process between the genres and their relation to the US- and the Italo-Western will be analyzed. The contextual approach implies a look at other genres of these countries and productions in other national cinemas which also include Western elements.
